About "afresh"

"afresh" is an EU project that aims at looking for innovations for a healthy lifestyle. Healthy food and physical activity contribute considerably to the prevention of diseases. Here, the key is to use appropriate concepts and products that serve both healthy diets and physical activity.

The "afresh" project therefore uses a dual approach bringing together actors with expertise in the nutrition sector as well as in the area of physical activity. Research institutes, public-sector and industry players from eight European clusters have joined forces to develop a joint approach based on scientific innovation.

The "afresh" project is supported by the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) in the European Union. It is funded within the section of "Regions of Knowledge" which aims to strengthen capacity buildng in research and the economy.

Currently, on a global scale, more individuals die of chronic obesity than of hunger- every fourth European and every third German suffers of overweight and obesity, mostly triggered by unhealthy lifestyles. The international conference “Health Connect” deals with lifestyle-related diseases and their prevention, especially through a broad-based worksite-health promotion and educational efforts as well as through technological innovation and public health actions. The common illness obesity with its dramatic consequences such as type 2-diabetes, metabolic and arteriosclerotic disorders including cancer, is on constant rise. The World Health Organisation (WHO) forecasts an increase in diabetes cases of 25 % in the next decade, with an affection of 40 million EU citizens, most of them living in the industrial developed countries. “Many diabetes patients of the future still have no idea of being concerned. Diabetes is an insidious lifestyle-disease developing secretly over decades,” declares the WHO. more here
